Noël Coward was born in in Teddington, Middlesex. He made his name as a playwright with The Vortex (), in which he also appeared. His numerous other successful plays included Fallen Angels (), Hay Fever (), Private Lives (), Design for Living () and Blithe Spirit (). During the war he wrote screenplays such as Brief Encounter () and In Which We Serve (). "The Vortex" by Noël Coward @ Rose Theatre Kingston I was not blown away by Steven Unwin's interpretation of this play, I found it mediocre but it could have been brilliant. The plot is set around an affluent mother struggling to accept her age and carrying on with a lover around the same age as her son -in an attempt to "stay young". A single-volume edition of one of Coward's masterpieces, published to tie in with major Donmar Warehouse production in December In The Vortex, Coward explores the darker side of the Cocktail Party set. Emotional blackmail, drug abuse and shattered relationships are minutely observed in this disturbing, early piece from a playwright whose sharp eye was more usually turned towards the light.


Noel Coward's The Vortex is a relatively obscure play. It was his first theatrical hit back in but it is not as sophisticated as Blithe Spirit or Private Lives which were Coward’s standout works. However, The Vortex is well worth reading especially for anyone interested in early depictions of queer characters.
